New requests for waste pickup must select a Principal Investigator (or primary contact) from a dropdown list customized by the departmental business contact. (Previously, you were able to free-text this field). Business contacts who need to set up their list of PIs may contact Anne Saxton at 556-4975 for further instructions.
Please note: The new chemical waste disposal funding mechanism outlined below does not change the waste label entry process. Please continue to follow the same procedures for requesting chemical waste pickup.
Container Labeling:
"In-use" containers used for hazardous waste must be marked with the words "Hazardous Waste" and the hazards of the contents. For a printable label as seen in the photos, click on the appropriate image below (image on the left produces small labels (Avery 5160 label format) and image on the right produces large labels (Avery 6878 label format). Note for large labels: When printing, please check the Print dialog screen and make sure to choose Actual size under the Scaling/Page size options and when possible, have the box checked for Choose paper source by PDF page size to ensure the labels print properly). Please fill out an online Hazardous Waste Disposal Label when filled. Thank You.
Chemical Waste Assessment Fee Update (Effective November 1, 2020)
The chemical waste assessment fee will increase to 1.85% effective November 1, 2020.
Program Overview
Disposal of chemical waste for the University of Cincinnati is funded through a monthly assessment applied to expenses charged to laboratory supply general ledger (GL) codes.
GL Codes Subject to the Assessment
• 531900 – Lab Expenses • 531901 – Lab Supplies • 531902 – Lab device/non-equipment • 531903 – Chemical Solutions • 531905 – Bio agents/toxins • 531906 – Liquids & gases • 531907 – Glassware • 531908 – Lab linens • 531909 – Rubber goods • 531910 – UC Scientific Core Svc • 531911 – Chemistry stockroom • 531912 – Physics stockroom
Cost Recovery Basis
This program is operated on a cost recovery basis and will not make or lose money. To accomplish this, the monthly assessment rate is evaluated periodically and adjusted as needed to meet the cost recovery goal.
The current assessment fee has increased to 1.85% due to increased disposal costs and reduced lab supply expenditures.
How the Assessment is Charged
• Grant and Service Center Funds: assessments will be charged to the Facilities and Administrative (F&A) overhead fund (D7) for the college associated with the grant or service center.
• Exception: UCit, Utilities, and other service center funds without an F&A overhead fund will be charged for their assessments via their non-service center core fund.
Where the Funds are Recorded
Proceeds from this assessment will be recorded in the Chemical Disposal Lab Waste designated Service Center Fund D101374. This approach accumulates disposal funding as chemicals are purchased and supports reduction of chemicals and hazardous waste on campus.
